Kudasai: is used as the english ”please”
Arigato: thank you (informal)
Arigato gozaimashita: thanks a lot (when you leave the restaurant)
Domo: thank you
Domo arigato: thank you very much
Hai: yes (is spoken very short, and the last vocal is hardly pronounced)
Itamae-san: the sushi-chef
Kampai: cheers!
Konban-wa: good evening
Konichi-wa: hello
Omakase shimasu: when you are sat in the bar and would like the chef to select the next sushi-piece for you
Sumimasu: excuse me
Omizu onegaishimasu: can I have a glas of water?
Naigu tofoku onegaishimasu: can I please get a knife and fork?
Kore wa nan desu ka: what is this?
Kore nishimasu: please bring me this
Ika o kudasai: I would like a piece with squid
Maguro o kudasai: I would like a piece with tuna
Murasaki: sushi-slang for the soy sauce
Gari: sushi-slang for the pickled ginger (the real name is sushoga)
Sabi: sushi-slang for wasabi (the hot green paste)
Mohitotsu kudasai: one more, please!
Oikura desu ka: how much is it?
Oishi katta: it was delicious
Agari: sushi-slang for green tea (normallly ocha) and a signal to the waiter, implying that you are finished eating
O-kanjo: the bill (remember to add a “kudasai” or a “onegaishimasu”)
O-aiso: slang for the bill
Kado desi desuka: can I pay with credit card?
Go chiso sama deshita: thank you for a delicious dinner
